Priorities

Focus on
Broomfield

As a non-partisan board, the focus of the Broomfield City Council should be on prioritizing what is best for Broomfield and its residents - free from the influence of national politics. By staying focused on local issues, we can prioritize and effectively address the concerns that directly impact the lives of the community members we represent. Local issues such as public health and safety, economic development, and maintaining our infrastructure play a crucial role in shaping the quality of life for Broomfield residents. Our decisions must be based on the merits and needs of Broomfield, and we must be responsive to the unique challenges and opportunities faced by our city.

Furthermore, preserving local control is paramount for making the decisions that are best for Broomfield and safeguarding the well-being of our community. We must continue to focus on smart, well-
planned development with local stakeholder input. Therefore, it is imperative that we protect our home rule authority and ensure that local land use decisions remain local. By maintaining control over our local affairs, we can ensure that policies and developments align with the unique needs of our Broomfield community, fostering a thriving and harmonious environment for everyone.

Health &
Safety

The health and safety of Broomfield residents remains a top priority with a focus on improving our air quality, protecting residents from the adverse impacts of oil and gas development, addressing our wildland-urban interface (WUI) along our western border, providing mental health resources, and maintaining a fully staffed police department committed to maintaining public safety.

Broomfield has taken a proactive stance on environmental protection by passing strong local oil & gas regulations following changes in state law that

removed state preemptions, performing continuous, reference-grade air quality monitoring, and actively using our data to inform state policies. Broomfield is located in the Denver Metro/North Front Range (DMNFR) ozone nonattainment area which remains in severe ozone noncompliance, so we must work diligently with the state and other municipalities to reduce ozone precursors from all sectors.

Broomfield recognizes the importance of maintaining well-trained police officers to ensure public safety. We have taken steps to ensure our police department is fully staffed, and officers are equipped with the resources and training they need to effectively serve our growing community including the successful BCORE (Broomfield Co-Responder) program which provides individuals in crisis appropriate mental health services. Enhanced police presence fosters a safer environment, deters crime, and strengthens community relations, nurturing trust and cooperation between law enforcement and residents.

Additionally, we have been working in conjunction with North Metro Fire Resue District to address the increasing threat of wildfire in the wildland-urban interface along portions of our western border through comprehensive wildfire prevention and mitigation strategies including public education in the impacted communities.

Fiscal
Responsibility

As a growing City and County, Broomfield has made significant investments in projects over the years for the benefit of the residents. However, in this process, we have accumulated debt that must be managed appropriately. It is crucial to continue to reduce our debt and make well informed and fiscally responsible decisions to continue to ensure a sustainable financial future for Broomfield. By prioritizing fiscal responsibility, we can alleviate the financial burden on our citizens.

We must also be cognizant of the recent increase in property valuations which will result in increased property taxes for many of our residents based on the current mill levy rate. It is essential to do what we can to align tax growth with our community's needs to promote fairness and ease the financial strain on our residents. Adhering to our long-range financial plan and focusing on commercial development, which generates four times the tax rate of residential development, will help secure Broomfield's financial stability.

Economic Development

Broomfield offers a dynamic environment for economic growth and business development. With our strategic location and business-friendly policies, we have excellent opportunities for attracting businesses and fostering prosperity. The Interlocken business area stands as a testament to Broomfield's appeal with easy access to major transportation routes. This prime location attracts national companies, providing them with a strong foundation to offer good-paying jobs and contribute to the local economy.

Broomfield provides a range of enticing mixed-use and commercial areas for developers from the redevelopment of Flatirons Mall to the upcoming Broomfield Town Center and the highly anticipated Baseline development - all offering excellent opportunities for growth and expansion. These areas demonstrate Broomfield's commitment to creating vibrant business districts and fostering a diverse economic landscape. By nurturing a thriving business community, Broomfield continues to attract enterprises, stimulate job growth, and continue our prosperity.

Infrastructure

Maintaining and upgrading infrastructure is a significant concern for local governments. This includes roads, bridges, water and sewer systems, public transportation, and other essential facilities. Aging infrastructure and growing populations can strain municipal resources, if careful planning and investment are not an ongoing process. Therefore, we completed an in-depth Utility Rate Study and subsequently approved the water rate changes last year to ensure rates charged for utility services support current and future infrastructure needs.

As Broomfield continues to grow, we must ensure our roads can handle the increased traffic and that we are proactively planning for public transportation. Broomfield is a member of the CO 7 Coalition which is a regional partnership which works collaboratively to secure funding for studies and improvements along the CO-7 corridor. Plans are underway for an interim mobility hub at the intersection of I-25 and CO-7 with a park-n-ride lot in the southeast corner of the

interchange near the Larkridge shopping mall which will provide Bustang service to Denver starting in mid-2025. Additionally, CO 7 Starter Bus Service from Boulder to Brighton with stops along CO-7 in Broomfield is scheduled to begin in 2026. Improvements such as these will help address the increasing traffic concerns along CO-7 as the Baseline development continues. This is just one example of the regional boards and commissions that we are part of as we plan for necessary regional transportation improvements.
